Hickey & Co Pty Ltd was established in 1927 as a coffin and casket manufacturing business by Mr Len Hickey, a cabinet maker. Len was joined at the fledgling funeral supply company by his brother in law, Eligio Paul Castaldi in 1930 who then purchased the company outright soon after.
Eligio (Paul I), an AIF veteran from WWI was responsible for steering the company through the Depression, WWII and the post war years. He was also instrumental in the relocation in 1946 from the original premises in Missenden Road Camperdown, near Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital to the current location on the corner of Audley Street and New Canterbury Road in Petersham. Paul I worked in the company tirelessly until his death in 1966.
Due to the high 'anti European sentiment' after the war, the company name was never changed, as an Irish-Australian company name was more easily accepted than a European company name. Hickey & Co slowly became one of the leading funeral supply companies in Australia.
In 1956 Hickey & Co ceased in house coffin and casket manufacturing to concentrate on funeral supplies until November 1962 when the company launched a comprehensive range of locally made American Style Metal Caskets, which were manufactured by the Pressed Metal Corporation (PMC) at the Enfield plant in Sydney. ( see American Style Metal Caskets )
PMC were primarily manufacturers and assemblers of motor vehicles such as the Austin A40, the late 1950's MGA 1500, the 1967 series 2a Land Rover cab chassis as used by the Australian Army and the 1977 – 78 series blue and white NSW State Transit Authority Mercedes Benz buses, to name a few.
This casket collection was trimmed with custom made drapery manufactured by Hickey & Co at their Petersham premises. These caskets were met with great success by funeral homes across the country until PMC ceased the manufacture of these products in the mid 1970's.
Paul Francis Castaldi (Paul II) joined the business in 1954 at the age of 18. He had 41 years serving the funeral industry until his death in October 1995. Paul and his wife Judy were probably two of the best known people in the Australian funeral industry. Paul was always gracious with his time and his belief in industry education was well known. Under Paul, Hickey & Co became the one of the first providers of mortuary education over 20 years ago, with technical assistance from The Dodge Company in the United States of America.
Paul Andrew Castaldi (Paul III) joined the business full time in July 1985, although he had been born into the funeral supply business like his father before him. Paul is the current managing director and was responsible for the establishment of the Paul F. Castaldi Scholarship for Embalmers in 2000 in memory of his father. Paul is proud to be serving some of the same funeral companies as his father and grandfather before him did.
In 1989 the warehouse and distribution operations for the company were relocated from Petersham to a warehouse in nearby Marrickville. Hickey & Co still operates out of both premises today.
Employing over 20 people, Hickey & Co is the largest funeral supply company in Australia, with the most comprehensive range of funeral hardware, coffin and casket interiors and an extensive range of associated products that are imported from some of the world's best manufacturers including; The Dodge Company, Ferno Washington, Bass-Mollett Publishers, Pierce-Caudle, Jewelled Cross, Church & Chapel, Matthews Cremation Group.
Hickey & Co distributes their products in every state of the country directly to funeral homes and to coffin manufacturers.
